About Teratai
A Name That Means Something
Teratai is the Malay word for lotus — a flower that grows steadily from still water. It is the spirit we bring to every family we work with.
Back to HomeOur Story
Teratai started in Seremban in 2019, when our founder Norzaharah Rahim noticed a gap that most families quietly struggled with: older relatives who were perfectly well but spending long hours alone at home while adult children were at work. There was no obvious support available — nothing between full residential care and simply hoping for the best.
She began by connecting a small group of trained companions with families in the Jalan Hang Tuah neighbourhood. Word spread carefully. By early 2020, Teratai had grown into a small but purposeful team, coordinating social outings, writing family plans, and arranging companionship for a growing number of households in Negeri Sembilan.
Today we serve families across Seremban and the surrounding area. Our team remains small by choice. We believe that personal familiarity — knowing a household's rhythms, knowing what a person enjoys, building trust over weeks and months — is what makes the difference between a service that feels like a favour and one that feels like a natural part of a family's life.
Our name, Teratai, reflects this approach. The lotus grows without rushing. It asks for patience and consistent conditions. So does good companionship. We are not in a hurry with the families we support, and we ask them not to be in a hurry with us either.
Respect First
Every older relative is a full person with preferences and history. We follow their lead, not our own agenda.
Family Partnership
Families are part of the arrangement, not passengers in it. We keep communication clear and consistent.
Steady Progress
We build familiarity gradually. A companion who knows your relative well is far more valuable than a new face every week.

How We Work
The principles and practices that shape every programme we deliver.
Written Agreements
Every arrangement begins with a clear written plan. Both families and companions know exactly what has been agreed before anything starts.
Companion Consistency
We assign the same companion to a household wherever possible. Familiar faces matter — particularly for older relatives who do better with predictable company.
Household Privacy
Information shared by families stays within our team and is used solely for planning and coordination. We do not share details with third parties.
Regular Reporting
End-of-day notes and monthly summaries keep families informed. Nothing is left vague or unaddressed in our communication.
Open Feedback Channels
Families can reach us by phone or message during working hours. If something is not working well, we want to hear about it quickly so we can respond.
Community Welfare Aligned
Our work is guided by the community welfare frameworks in Negeri Sembilan. We operate with full awareness of local context and local standards.
Companionship and Family Support in Negeri Sembilan
Teratai works in the space that most families feel quietly but rarely know how to address — the long hours when an older relative is at home without company. In Seremban and the surrounding towns of Negeri Sembilan, many households face the same situation: working-age family members are out of the house during the day, and an older parent or grandparent is left without a structured routine or social connection.
We are not a care agency and we do not provide personal or nursing assistance. What we offer is organised, thoughtful companionship and coordination — a consistent companion for afternoon hours, an activity calendar for social engagement, or a clear family plan that brings everyone onto the same page. These are practical, human solutions that make a tangible difference to daily life.
Our work draws on an understanding of Seremban's community fabric: the neighbourhood associations, the community halls where weekly activities are held, the festive calendar that matters to Malaysian families, and the informal networks that older residents rely on. This local knowledge shapes every programme we put together.
Families who have worked with Teratai often say the same thing: they stopped worrying so much. Not because we removed every challenge, but because there was now a plan, a familiar face, and a clear way to stay informed. That is the foundation of what we do.
